A professional facial is an investment in your skin's health, but how much you get out of it largely depends on how you prepare. Here's what to do (and what to avoid) before visiting your aesthetician.
1. Why Skin Preparation Matters
A professional facial costs both money and time. Well-prepared skin responds better to active ingredients, is less sensitive to exfoliation, and shows results faster. In other words, 15 minutes of preparation at home can double the value of a salon treatment.
2. Skip Exfoliation 48 Hours Before
Retinol, AHA and BHA acids, and physical scrubs make your skin thinner and more sensitive. If you use them right before a treatment, the aesthetician won't be able to apply stronger active ingredients because it could cause redness or irritation.
- Pause retinol 48-72 hours before your treatment
- Avoid AHA/BHA acids for at least 48 hours
- No physical scrubs 2-3 days in advance
- Don't apply self-tanner to your face before a treatment
3. Skin Hydration Starts from Within
Dehydrated skin absorbs the serums and masks used during a facial less effectively. In the two days before your visit, increase your water intake and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Alcohol dehydrates skin and dilates capillaries, which can intensify redness during the treatment.
Hydrate your skin from the inside. No mask can compensate for chronic water deficiency.
4. Arrive Without Makeup or With Minimal Makeup
Every facial begins with cleansing, but layers of foundation, concealer, and waterproof mascara consume precious time. If you're coming straight from work, at least remove heavy makeup. A light BB cream or tinted moisturiser is fine.
A clean face also allows the aesthetician to assess your skin's condition at first glance and tailor the treatment to your actual needs.
5. What to Tell Your Aesthetician on the First Visit
A facial is most effective when the aesthetician has the full picture. Be open about anything that might affect your skin:
- Allergies to ingredients or fragrances
- Medications you're taking (especially antibiotics and hormones)
- Skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, or acne
- Recent aesthetic procedures (laser, chemical peel)
Think of it as a collaboration, not an exam. The more information your aesthetician has, the better the result.
6. Consistency Brings Results
A single facial can refresh your skin, but real results come with regularity. Most aestheticians recommend a treatment once a month, often enough for professional care, yet not so often that skin becomes oversensitive.
